I used to have the clip version, and I loved it because it tightly secured my GPS unit to the shoulder strap of my backpack. One of the features it lacked was a carabiner that could be hooked up horizontally to vertical a strap, so that the clip could then be attached vertically to the carabiner. Therefore, it always took time to figure out how to secure the unit on a new backpack. Recently however, I was careless and broke the clip.

I then decided to replace the broken clip with the one that already comes with the carabiner thinking it would take care of the previous issue, and it did, but unfortunately the webbing strap that attaches the carabiner to the back of the GPS unit is too long, and so when hiking, the unit dangles all over the place.

I now have to spend time folding the webbing onto itself so as to shorten its length, and fix the GPS unit into position. I wish the features of the two clips were combined for superb convenience and performance.

Oveerall it’s a great and sturdy product, though.

  2. This works just the way I hoped it would. On the older Etrex you will need a differnt back to screw it into. That or you can glue it on the back of one the unit came with. Works great.

    Pros:

-Solid attachment to a stud that screws into back of GPS

-Same mounting stud is used in bicycle mount, making it easy to switch back and forth

    -Carabiner is smooth and sturdy

-Easily pivots and twists to view screen

    Cons:

    -Price

Works very well; provides a secure attachment that I’ve come to trust. Unlike other methods I’ve employed, I don’t feel that the need to constantly check and make sure it hasn’t fallen off. Used regularly for hiking (geocaching) and sailing. I think the same results could be achieved for about 30% less.

This is a nice little accessory for my eTrex Venture GPS unit, but it’s a little spendy for what it is. The carabiner is huge too! I replaced the one that came on this with one much smaller.

I bought the 60Cx GPS and the neoprene cover for it at the same time and wrongly “assumed” that the cover for the 60 series was like the cover for my old Garmin eTrex. In that the cover for the eTrex had it’s own clip attachment for hooking it on to your backpack. Once my order arrived I was saddened to find that there was no way to clip my GPS on to my backpack straps with out this Carabiner device.

So…. I had to order this piece separately to be able to clip my GPS on to my backpack straps rather than carrying it in my pocket or something equally cumbersome. The Carabiner works well and is exactly what you need in order to be able to attach your GPS to something.
