Good Looking Quality Cover for the Kindle DX - One Fixable Problem
|
Review Date: February 7, 2010
Reviewer: Wh Gulledge III, Wahiawa, HI United States
Bought the Kindle DX and the Octo cover at the same time and have had both about a week now. I am very pleased with both and would recommend each without reservation. The excellent reviews for the Octo product convinced me to take a chance even though the price is not low - well you get what you pay for and I've always liked quality - and the Octo cover is quality. As other reviewers mention the feel and appearance of the cover is rich and luxurious - I like that it is a bit retro looking. The brown is very attractive and with the jet black felt-like inner fabric it sets off and compliments the white Kindle nicely. Quality stitching and attention to detail. Perfect fit over the Kindle.
The cover does fold back on itself for one-hand reading and so far the leather seems like it will take this kind of stress - it is supple. Time will tell. The cover is a bit heavy but that is okay - I wanted quality and a means to protect the Kindle and the screen from pressure. The cover is nicely stiff over the screen to afford protection. Not so heavy that it is a burden to hold.
The mount clamps/release mechanism for attaching to the Kindle work flawlessly and once used to them it is a simple matter to take the Kindle off and put it on the cover - 5 to 10 seconds. There is a black elastic strap, also easy to put on and take off, on the lower right corner to prevent the back cover from flopping away from the Kindle and stressing the mounting hardware and possibly causing a stress fracture of the Kindle or screen. There is no clasp or strap to keep the Octo closed but that is not a problem for me and would rather not have something that would just get in the way.
One reviewer mentioned the black felt inner lining as a negative and felt it would get dirty and soiled over time. I see the black felt liner as a positive for several reasons. It is very attractive and it shows lint and dirt specs easily and lets one know it is time to clean off stuff that can transfer to the Kindle screen. In a former life I wore a dark blue police uniform and used to use a couple loops of 2" masking tape around my fingers to pat down the uniform before duty to remove lint and foreign matter. I do the same thing with the black felt on the Octo- use clear desk tape wrapped around my fingers to pat the inner cover and remove dirt specs and lint - comes out looking like new. Caution, do not use duct tape or masking tape - this has too much adhesive and you will probably end up lifting the felt off the liner - use simple clear desk tape that is not overly adhesive.
Another thing I use for the Kindle and screen (that can be bought at any camera store) is "Kimtech Kimwipes" Kimtech Science KimWipes Delicate Task Wipers; 4.4 x 8.4 in. (11.2 x 21.3cm); 1-plyand ROR (Residual Oil Remover) ([...]) in a small spray bottle that is used for cleaning sensitive camera lenses and microscopes. Great for the Kindle and screen - removes all dirt, grime, fingerprints, dust, lint, etc.
Another reviewer mentioned that the 5-way controller button for the Kindle protrudes above the plane of the Kindle face and this is true. When the Octo cover is shut you can feel the cover clicking down on the button and releasing. It is pretty irritating and even though I always put the Kindle to sleep before closing the cover who knows what this constant pressing and releasing of the controller button will do. The suggestion was that Octo provide a small square cutout of the leather inner pocket so the controller button can recess without having pressure applied. This is an excellent suggestion so I did it myself with an Exacta pointed knife - cut out a ½ inch square of the inner leather pocket so the controller button can seat without making contact. It works fine and there is no longer any pressure on the button when the cover is closed. Does it look a little funky - yes, but not too bad - it is in an area that no one will see (except you) and it takes care of an annoying problem. If you do this make sure to slip a piece of thin cardboard into the pocket behind the flap so you can cut without puncturing the outer flap. The leather is thick and it is unlikely you will even go through the felt inner liner - I did not.
All in all a very good product. Another plus is you can attach a portable mini-light to the Octo and not to the Kindle (which might damage it).

I have no complaints about this cover. It looks very nice and has a good quality 'feel' to it (which it should for the price). I like that it has the hinge clasp and the rubber band to hold the right side in place.
Love it!

Great look and feel. Easy to handle. Although a lot of reviews I read previously warned about opening it backwards (which might damage your Kindle), it would really kind of take some being careless to do that. The front is clearly marked with a small embossed logo, and all you have to do is quickly look at the bottom right hand corner to verify that you are opening it from the front. So unless you are person who wouldn't pay attention to that, you have nothing to worry about.
Beautiful leather and exquisite quality.

From the pictures and a visit to the Octovo web site, I was convinced this would be the perfect cover for my Kindle. I couldn't be more pleased. The latch system and the little corner grip secure the cover perfectly. The overall feel is like that of a vintage leather bound law book. I get many compliments on the cover... When the person complimenting me on the case discovers there is s Kindle inside, it generates an incredible amount of interest. I was very pleased with the beautiful "aged" leather and exquisite quality.
Love this Cover

My husband has the black leather Kindle cover and is so jealous of mine. You MUST buy the Kindle covers that bend back like this one does. It makes Kindle reading JUST like a book but better.
