Garmin 2009 Portugal and Spain GPS maps worked great on my recent trip to Spain. I drove with the Garmin from Madrid to Ciudad Quesada (approximately 4.5 hours). I found the center of town with ease and made very few mistakes getting there. Sometimes it was difficult to tell which exit off of a traffic circle I was meant to follow, but those mistakes were picked up immediately and corrected. Spain loves traffic circles! I would recommend this product if you are going to be driving in Spain, because it removes the stress of feeling lost in a foreign country.

Slow to find satellite signal
Kept losing signal
May have been worth renting or buying one
in Europe especially with all the new
highways.

My wife and I always take our Garmin Nuvi with us whenever we have to rent a car on our vacations. We have been to Europe on two prior different occasions and on those two occasions we used regular paper maps. We just got back from vacationing in Spain and Portugal this month and before we left we purchased these Garmin Maps to try our Garmin Nuvi. We did take paper maps as a back up. I am happy to say, we didn’t need our paper maps. The Spain and Portugal maps were not only a time saver and precise, but they were easy to use. They even made driving in small town roads really easy. We were able to find all of the towns we wanted to visit and were able to find major hotels, landmarks, and attractions that we were looking for, just remember that if you are looking for a list of similar items, such as “beaches”. For example, in Portugal after realizing that you have to type in the word “Praia” all of the beaches we wanted to visit were listed. We made the mistake of typing in the name of the beach like Selama, but were taken to the actual town center and not the parking lot for the beach. Once we figured this out, getting directly to the beach was a breeze.
A second tip I would offer when renting a car in either country, is to use the your Garmin’s “Where Am I” feature before driving off with your car from the rental car parking lot. This will give you a chance to “save” that actual location and make it easier to find when you return your rental car to the same location. We did this and I am glad we did because there were no signs directing you to the rental parking lot at the Seville train station were we returned our car.
I was really pleased with this purchase and highly recommend it for anyone planning to rent a car in either country.

I have two more days on the road with these maps. It has been a bit frustrating. I am solo, so trying to read a map and drive isn’t safe and I thought this would be the ticket. However, I have gotten more mixed up with this than I ever did with Michelin. Three big caveats: 1) It often doesn’t match the turn number and the road number at roundabouts. So, if you don’t know the road you want to take, don’t believe it the first time. Drive all the way around the roundabout and make sure that you are taking the right road. In medieval town plans, there is no such thing as “go around the block” and at one point I spent one half hour getting back to where I needed to be to take the correct turn. 2) It often calls out a different name for the road than the one posted. 3) It will send you down pedestrian only streets, which you might not realize until you are indeed there. (They are not blocked completely for delivery trucks to get to businesses, and they might not have a “blocked entry” or one way sign for that reason.) It is a huge problem, so be very careful. I’ve not yet been arrested, but I have come close to crying!
If you do decide to take this, take good maps, too. Go through all the turns and routes before you start and compare them to the map. If it seems reasonable, let the Garmin clue you as to turns. However, you might need to negotiate on your own, too.
I did write to Garmin while on this trip, and the advice I was given was to reset my unit and to download an update. (Of course, I don’t have that cable with me, but this should have been the current version, as I just purchased it.) Moreover, when I did make my hotel reservation today, I mentioned that I wanted directions because I had terrible luck with my….(and I couldn’t remember the Spanish word), so the desk clerk said, “GPS?” Yes, it was not the first time he had heard that.
btw, I’ve used the US version of Garmin for a few years and have had none of these issues.

In general, a great add on product to my Garmin Nuvi. We drove around southern Spain and I found it an invaluable tool, especially when trying to navigate through larger cities. At times there was some confusion as to the direction to take, but that might have been related to the signal quality at the time. Bottom line, if you are driving in Spain and you do not want to rent a GPS unit, buy the maps and take your Garmin Nuvi with you.
